Guadi

A 5 track crossover jazz ep (23m 24s) — released September 15th 2017 on Enid Records

GUADI's five heavy duty tunes remain true to Lascelle and VBF's mission statement of 'spiritual jazz with a post punk attitude'. The (almost) title track 'Get Up And Do It' kicks things off with a serious chunk o' funk with a motorik edge, topped off with some juicy horn section stabs and solos. If the JBs had come from Dusseldorf they may have sounded a bit like this. 'Love and Hate' takes things down a notch into a lush, slow burning bossa ballad, headed up by vocalist Ebony Rose and saxophonist Jake Telford's soulful ruminations.

A rework of 'Amazing Grace' begins side 2; Lascelle and friends conjure up a shifting, percussion heavy astral jazz backdrop for Ebony Rose and saxophonist Nat Birchall to rhapsodise over. Legendary vocalist Maggie Nicols makes an appearance on 'Got to Believe' (a much needed call for positivity in troubled times), set over a slinky, luscious groove dripping with shimmering Rhodes piano and featuring a sweet trombone solo from Owen Dawson. The closing 'Alive in the Five' features Nicols once again; her wordless flights alternate with Ben Cowen's beautifully inventive electronics, propelled by Lascelle's intricate mix of machine and human generated beats.

Like previous VBF releases, GUADI's kaleidoscopic mix of influences and moods looks to the past and the future simultaneously. It packs a lot into its 20 or so minutes. Dive in.
